Bible Study Tools & Notes

Did you know that the word Bible is not in the Bible at all? That’s right! Bible is the Greek word bíblos (βίβλος) and means “book”. It can also mean “scroll” or “parchment.” In the New Testament, the disciples most commonly refer to the Bible as the scripture (γραφὰς), often in plural, which means writing(s) in Greek.

Jewish people refer to scripture in Hebrew as the Tanakh, which is an acronym for ToraN’vi’im, and K’tuvim, which means The Instruction, The Spokespeople, and The Writings. You can see now why Paul called it “the writings” in the New Testament.
